Summary by Bob Ashby:
The first half was stalemated ending in a 0-0 tie. The scoring floodgates opened in the second half. West scored goals in the first, third, and 8th minutes after the intermission to take what appeared to be a comfortable lead, but Mason mounted a late-game comeback which barely fell short. The Comets scored within the 62nd and 72nd minutes to pull within one goal of Lakota West. The Firebirds dodged a bullet when a Mason shot hit the frame and bounced harmlessly away with less than one minute remaining in the contest. The game ended with West winning 3-2 and improving their GMC record to 1-0-1, good for a four-way tie for the conference lead. Justin Winkle was the star of the game by picking up the go-ahead goal, scoring another goal by making a penalty kick, and finally by assisting Nate Boellner on what proved to be the winning goal. Winkle’s first goal followed an assist pass from Colin McEwen.
